Faculty Profile
Peter Mackelworth is a geographer and conservation biologist with expertise in the development of marine conservation policies and sustainable development in small island environments. He completed his PhD at University College London in 2007 focusing on marine conservation in Croatia. Shortly after completing his PhD, Peter was invited to guest lecture for a semester at Bowdoin College, Maine. He teaches Human Dimensions of Conservation and Marine Protected Areas modules on the Masters course of Conservation at the University of Primorska, Slovenia. His current research projects cover two main fields. The first is looking at the development of marine conservation within Croatia, specifically the application of the international conventions and agreements. The second field is broader, looking at the development of transboundary marine conservation in the Adriatic, Mediterranean and globally. He has worked for the Croatian NGO Blue World Institute since its inception in 2000, and currently serves as the Conservation Director, cooperating with research groups and organizations throughout the Mediterranean and further afield.
